What is Abandoned

Abandoned started several years ago when our first drummer moved onto the astral plane and Crab Calloway got lost in the Bermuda Triangle. With the band hot off its first year of live shows, Shotgun and Mia wanted to keep momentum up, and decided that it was a good time to start working on some song recordings. The only problem was their complete lack of knowledge in the recording process and the ever present broke-ness preventing them from paying someone to do it for them. Shotgun constructed Studio Hot Box, a sound insulating box of pvc pipe and moving blankets in an un-airconditioned Somerville apartment, and began self educating on home recording. He spent the following months poorly recording scratch tracks and fumbling guitar bits on his new at-home setup of a pre-owned interface and a condenser mic from the internet. He watched hours of youtube videos on how to use his free audio recording software, and somewhere along the way, the idea for Abandoned came about.

It turns out it’s actually easier for Crab to swim back from the Bermuda Triangle than it is for Shotgun to record a few easy songs at home: Crab Calloway triumphantly returned before the project became anything. The band became distracted with a couple Halloweens and Halfoweens and recording No Heroes and See Yer Guts, and for a while Abandoned sat as a series of unopened Audacity project files. The project may have fallen off the priority list, but it never quite went away–something about letting a project called “Abandoned” actually become abandoned was too tragic to let stand.

If you had told Shotgun that it would take him like 3 years to learn enough about recording and mixing to make something he could stand to listen to, he probably wouldn’t have started in the first place. And yet, years later and after watching countless how-to videos and reading through music engineering forum posts, Abandoned began to take shape. 5 songs began to feel real, and listenable, and the soundscape that brought them all together began to tell a story worth hearing. And now, finally, Abandoned has been deemed safe for public consumption.
