WETU
(Traditional round house of Cape Cod’s indigenous people)

Every kid that’s living today
Gonna grow up in a sweltering wave
Tropical disease, fighting in the streets
Food running out
And it’s all 'cause of climate breakdown
Story come apart at the seams
Still got a chance to turn it back

Window’s closing but it’s open a crack
Change the energies, reelect the trees
Simplify, localize, and do it together
That’s the tricky part—
How we ever gonna agree?

Fight to save the Earth
Shame “those stupid jerks who don’t see Her worth”
But is that the way we wanna be? No!

Every group is on its own track
Listening to its own pack of facts
No one ever starts to open up a heart
Is that a surprise
When our sides only know how to argue
You’re my enemy
Knock you down so I can succeed

I asked a guy whose views were the same
Would you sit down with the one we blame
Try to make a friend, this is what he said—
“I’d talk to him but he’d never talk to me.”
If that’s the way that we see
How we ever gonna agree?

War to stop our town from developing down
Call our neighbors clowns—
Is that the way we wanna be?

I need a wetu
Within that a circle
Within that a peace pipe to share
Not to convince you
My way is better
But just to lay ourselves bare
What would I say?

I’d say that plagues and floods and fires are here
Every day I’m living in fear
That we don’t have a plan for what will be at hand
Normal is gone and crisis is the new normal
Are we doing our all to face the writing on the wall?

But the rot in the giant tree
Is not the thing most hurting me
There’s no more common dance floor
You and I aren’t playing for the same team
No community
How we ever gonna agree?

Shun each other’s eyes,
Never realize we’re the same inside—
Is that the way we wanna be?
