there was a host of ambition going into the making of 'Popular' (the album). it was the 1st album of mine where there was no investor-interference in its creation. just me, w an engineer, a small studio, & a bunch of instruments. but b4 gettn 2 the recording phase, i spent 6 - 12 months writing songs. exorcising trauma - mine & the trauma lifted from the stories of others. i thot SNM's melody had a magical quality 2 it - but i wantd the lyric 2 dig deepr, darkr. n fact, the whole album was intended 2 break thru social taboos. n my zeal 2 squeeze this new ground between my toes, & the hard practicalities of organizing the completion of a record, i nevr recovered the head space 2 make the lyric speak w the poetic perversity i was seeking. & also bcuz any time I tried 2 go inside myself 2 find these free spaces, i emerged from them foggy & too quickly sobered by the chaos that had blown n my absence. & i would hav 2 spend the next days re-ordering my whole life. it's a ritual of creativity and disruption that all of u may know. there's a line between imagination & reality - it is the place where u watch & listen quietly to products. but the place from which art comes - this place where u collect the screams inside u and tame them & materialize them - is diametrically opposed 2 the clockwork of civilization. but it's the only way change is made. the #21 song in the countdown of my favorited songs that i've recorded is 'SNM'.
