DEORLAF OBRUX by XT

Deorlaf Obrux

This music was recorded 'live' in London at Cafe OTO, 14 July, 2021. It was a concert to celebrate the launch of our recently released LP, Deorlaf X. Travel restrictions at the time meant we could not both be present in person at OTO, but we developed an approach to playing together-apart which meant our respective sounds would mix, be together, in the room, for the audience.

In advance we'd discussed, among other things, dub, and how to imagine 'pouring' sonic material from different sources (places and pasts) into the same real and imagined space/time structure - using the Deorlaf X sounds and structure(s) as raw materials.

On the night we assembled something new together, simultaneously, (re-)forming, (re-)mixing and (re-)pouring sounds from two places, channelled through OTO’s sound system, mixed in the room.

With a laptop each - Seymour in London and Paul through a live AV link in Brussels - we realised and rendered a re-working of Deorlaf X, simultaneously made-live and pre-pared*, for the limited-number OTO audience that night.

The original Deorlaf X is an intense (studio) compression of accumulated recordings taken from over nearly a decade of working together (mostly at OTO) with real and imaginary drums (Paul) and actual and potential saxophone (Seymour) remodulated through ideas and texts**, specific to each discrete project. This Deorlaf Obrux version continues and extends even further this ongoing, mutating and exploratory process, with potential and imagined tools.

*Another iteration of a re-imagined Deorlaf X is available as Paul's Deorlaf Z (version) for XT Deorlaf X Live via Tokuroku.
