Odd Balade by Tryphème

French artist Tryphème debuts on Impatience with “Odd Balade”, a darkly-hued collection of songs drawn from human delicacy and dreamworld mythology.



“Odd Balade” is Tryphème’s most ambitious and boldest record to date - both lyrically and musically. The album’s thirteen tracks resist rigid genre boundaries and flutter from medieval folk realms, sprawling synths, gothic 80s wave, leftfield pop, haunted vocals, mutant electronica to reverbed guitars - all reflected through her own shadowy prism. Especially album closer “A Walk In The Vercors” evokes a soothing serenity that echoes the sonic balm of Julee Cruise.



Tryphème’s musical repertoire trends heavily electronic and somewhat abstracted, but on “Odd Balade”, the artist slips into the role of the modern troubadour with a shift to a more poetically and personal songwriting that is infused with symbolism and dreamlike fantasies. The connective tissue of the album is the audacity to love and the vulnerability that ensues. As intimate and introspective as the lyrics are, the themes remain universal and human to the core: the fear of losing a loved one, the melancholia of leaving places and the cycles of life. The record was largely composed in Chars, stirred by the French village’s eerie atmosphere and frequent trips to the seaside in Brittany, where Tryphème resides. Drawing inspiration from the rugged terrain of the seaside landscapes, the writings of Allen Ginsberg and Mark Fisher and the hyperrealist art of Scott Prior, Tryphème uses her songs to depict life with broad strokes of rhythm.



On “Odd Balade” Tiphaine Belin consolidates herself as a gifted, nimble songwriter, masterly producer and subtly powerful vocalist. The record combines her skill for crafting lush, alien sound worlds and efficient, alluring arrangements with stealthily devastating songs. Her voice becomes a key ingredient, appearing on eleven of Odd Balade’s thirteen tracks, by turns heavily manipulated, sampled and replayed as a form of percussion, or basically bare.

“Odd Balade” is the manifestation of Tryphème’s roving artistic practice, a ceremonial-grade sacrament cast in a rich nocturnal glow. Pairing the mundane with the mythic, the album stays true to its core: odd and strangely familiar.

Tryphème, nouvelle signature du label Impatience, publie avec « Odd Balade » une collection de 13 chansons aux tonalités sombres, inspirées par la psyché humaine et la mythologie du monde des rêves.

« Odd Balade » est l’album le plus audacieux de Tryphème à ce jour - tant au niveau des paroles que de la musique. Les treize titres de l’album s’affranchissent des frontières des genres et voltigent entre sphères folk, synthés rayonnants, wave gothique, leftfield pop, voix hantées, electronica mutante et guitares réverbérées - le tout reflété à travers son propre prisme ombragé. En particulier, « A Walk In The Vercors » le titre qui clôt l’album, évoque une quiétude réconfortante faisant écho à la douceur musicale de Julee Cruise.

Le répertoire musical de Trypheme était essentiellement électronique et plutôt abstrait, mais sur "Odd Balade" l'artiste se glisse dans le rôle du troubadour moderne, avec une écriture plus poétique et personnelle, imprégnée d’onirisme et de symbolisme.

Le fil conducteur de l'album est l'audace d'aimer et la vulnérabilité qui en découle. Aussi intimes et introspectives que soient les paroles, les thèmes restent universels et profondément humains; la peur de perdre un être cher, la mélancolie de quitter un lieu et les différents cycles qui rythment la vie.

Le disque a été composé en grande partie à Chars dans le 95, influencé par l’atmosphère étrange du village ainsi que par des voyages fréquents en Bretagne, où réside désormais Trypheme.
S’inspirant des paysages escarpés du bord de mer, des écrits d'Allen Ginsberg et de Mark Fisher et de l'art hyperréaliste de Scott Prior, Trypheme utilise ses chansons pour dépeindre la vie à son rythme.

Sur "Odd Balade", Trypheme s'affirme comme une compositrice agile, une productrice douée, et une chanteuse subtilement puissante.
Le disque combine ses talents d’orfèvre pour créer un monde sonore luxuriant et des chansons aux arrangements élégants.
La voix de Tiphaine Belin devient un instrument clé, apparaissant sur onze des treize morceaux d'Odd Balade; nue ou manipulée, samplée et utilisée telle une percussion.

"Odd Balade" est l'expression de la pratique artistique itinérante de Trypheme, un rituel projeté dans un intense clair obscur. En associant le banal au mythique, l'album reste fidèle à son essence: à la fois bizarre et étrangement familier.
