Noaidi (+ Currents) by Tropico del Cancer
"Noaidis, often referred to as the "Sámi shamans", are the traditional healers and protectors of the Sami people. Noaidis are considered to have the role of mediator between humans and the spirits. To undertake this mediation, the noaidis are believed to be able to communicate with the spirit world, and to ask what sacrifice needed to be made by a person so that he might return to good health and be successful in the hunt for food. Sacrifices designed by the noaidi are understood to reestablish a kind of balance between the mortal and immortal worlds. "
“Noaidi” was born as a site-specific music-areal-dance performance together with Emma Langmoen, inspired by the ancestral people of the North and their relation with the territory, deep time and the eternal cycles of transformation.
The piece includes a poem by Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, a Finnish-born Norwegian Sámi writer, musician and artist. He was one of the most internationally recognized contributors of Sámi culture.
Another source of musical inspiration is ancient Persian music, where the hammered dulcimer has its roots.
The digital version includes 2 more tracks from "Currents", a new-circus performance by the Scandinavian company Acting for Climate.
AfC is currently sailing the world around with “Currents”, combining site-specific acrobatics, sailing culture, environmental activism and community education. These tracks are now going to travel with them until 2027!
The cassette tapes are handcrafted and dubbed in real time by myself, each cover is unique with an original linoleum print by Rebecka Maria, my wife.
The side B are the previously released track "Walking Home" and "Si Spezza La Terra", from the "homes" EP.

Juan Pino’s minimal and poetic sound universe recalls the world roots and the magic of dreams. From the many travels to the Andes, the Amazon and the Ganges he gathered a bunch of instruments at his wooden house in a park of Copenhagen: marimba, harmonicas, kalimbas, hammered dulcimer, organa, mini synths, vocals and percussion. Juan was born in Ecuador, grew up on the South of Alps.
