Wrapping up the album is the title track, Mounting Losses. This song is inspired by Alzheimer's disease, a hell of a thing that steals away everything which makes a person.

I have up close and personal experiences with it from my grandmother as well as Nancy's mother. Each passed away from it. The slow ebbing of their personality, their misinterpreted and imagined terrors, and their states of utter bewilderment was a horrible thing to watch. It stayed with me. So too did those places that catered to caring for Alzheimer's patients, places that were simultaneously institutional yet kind and humane, full of perpetually lost souls that compounded the confusion and chaos for everyone within their walls.

Mounting Losses tells the tale of a WWI soldier who survives the war and marries to have a happy but unwillingly childless life. He's living in a home for dementia patients, and while his life is mostly a fog now, he still has occasional glimpses of clarity back to days from his youth. The earlier memories are the strongest and the hardest to erase. He's finished with life, but life isn't finished with him.
