& not just empire & all that palaver
We've got towns founded by Romans Normans Saxons Celts & Danes
& railways built by Irish navigators
Our culture has been influenced by everyone who came
From the Caribbean Africa & Asia

So let's build a land for everyone of every creed & colour
Where we live side by side for evermore
& everyone can get along & learn from one another
Masalaland let's mix it up some more

We've got HP sauce & beans on toast & gravy on a Sunday roast
& we'll never lose our sense of style
Though Cool Britannia's dead & gone
We've still got our Carry Ons & red buses & Settle to Carlisle

One land is the village green the duck pond & church spire
A cup of tea & a sandwich of cucumber
But the other land's Wat Tyler & rebellion in the shires
& Captain Swing to wake you from your slumber
For the martyrs of Tolpuddle the East End match girl's strike
The suffragettes & the slain of Peterloo
For Boudicca Alfred The Great for Thomas Paine & William Blake
& all those who gave their lives for me & you

For your kiss me quick hats & your fish'n'chips
Fruit machines with two bob bits
& a what the butler saw film at the seaside
Breakfast in a greasy spoon & a warm beer in the afternoon
& down the Kursaal hoping for a free ride
For the market traders making deals
& the seafood stalls selling jellied eels

The old bank holiday traditions
Now social history on television
