La Bestia from Estren by TEYR

We learned this curious Bayou waltz with a Spanish name on the returning ferry from the Outer Hebrides. Over the next few years, it slowly became a monster. Here on Estren, and along with its twin An Tros, it tells the story of taming a beast of the sea. While recording with Abel, Tommie recounted the story of Cornish fisherfolk dragging nets out between fleets of boats. From a nearby hill, another person known as a huer would shout to direct the vessels below. Abel takes on the fisherman’s character in this track using his Sesotho mother tongue. A big hand to Alastair and Abel for their vivid inventions.

Folk trio TEYR evolved out of London’s thriving session scene, combining bothy ballads, focsle shanties, folk tunes and Irish poetry. Their unique blend of voices and instruments draws links between the many sounds of the Celtic and British isles.
