Ces deux pièces sont construites à partir d'une même sélection de prises de sons (réalisées entre 1995 et 2003). Les enregistrements choisis pour la première pièce vont servir d'étalonnage pour la seconde pièce selon la règle suivante : à partir de la structure 1 de A vers Z construire la 2 de Z vers A. Sans respecter scrupuleusement l'ordre structurelle, les deux pièces s'écoutent comme si elles se faisaient face dans un miroir déformant. La réponse qui est donnée à chaque son est en ce sens différente dans chaque pièce puisque fonction de la structure générale.

These two parts are built starting from the same selection of recordings (realized between 1995 and 2003). The selected recordings (for the first part) will be used as calibration for the second part
according to the following rule : starting from structure 1 of A towards Z to build the 2 of Z towards A. Without respecting scrupulously the structural order, the two parts are listened as if they faced
in a deforming mirror. Thus the respons which is given to each sound is different in each part because of this general structure.

Les Oscillations

Sound-wise, this must be one of the most impressive albums I’ve ever heard. It starts with a sheet of white noise, which gradually morphs into a powerful rainstorm, its torrents of water realised so threedimensionally as if they were pouring down right into your living room. At later stages, the sharp, edgey sounds really seem to leave stings in your body and the environmental tapings of scraping metal envelope you like a 5.1. recording. Eric La Casa is not just a field recorder and his work is not just musique concrete: His inspiration derives from a child-like, naive and emotionally filtered view of his immediate surroundings – and his fields are the winding paths of the right brain half.
Concept-wise, “Les Oscillations” is definitely a cunning experiment. Just as much as La Casa feels his way forward in his puissant compositional manner, his actions are always guided by highly analytical train of thought aimed at sharpening our ears and led on by a insatiable curiosity for finding out more about his own sensory system. The idea to this CD consists of a simple proposition: That our perception of sound can never be seperated from this sound’s context. In order to prove his assumption, La Casa has used a pool of recordings realised over the lengthy period of eight years (between 1995 and 2003). The structure of the second piece is determined by the arrangement of the first one in the following manner:

The source material for both tracks is thus completely identical (if one forgets about slight variations of the order for artistic reasons), with only the order of things reversed. This enabes a perfect testing ground for the question at hand and many adjacent issues – in how much compiling sounds and arranging them in the studio constitutes a musical act, for example. The result speaks for itself: While the opening half of the album overwhelms the listener like a force of nature and then fades into a quiet space of concentrated minimalism, the second piece keeps the tension lingering for much longer, its parts sustaining each other and keeping the momentum. And no matter how hard you try, you can not force your brain to regard each sound on its own or to even disentangle it from its surroundings. Its effect is determined by what proceeds and what follows it – and in what kind of combinations it occurs.
Does this matter? I would say it does in many important ways. First of all, it implies that the acoustic world around us provides for neverending and always fresh listening sensations. Not a single moment can be repeated, as the variables are caught in an infinite circle dance. And then there is another matter: If everything we perceive is made up of myriads of individual events, does our mental image of “listening” as a unified process do reality justice? Éric La Casa, per chi già non lo conosce, è un concretista di scuola tipicamente francese che, nei suoi montaggi, utilizza materiali sonori (naturali o procurati) estremamente forti; è così anche in “Les Oscillations”, disco in cui è presente una forte tensione (emotiva nonché musicale). Nell’estratto da l’“Anachronisme” del marsigliese Christophe Tarkos (morto quarantenne nel 2004), che viene riportato nell’interno di copertina, si legge di dilatazione - del paesaggio delle pupille dei sensi e, senz’altro, anche del pensiero – e di un ordine che rinasce dal disordine, di materiali che vengono estrapolati dal loro contesto e perdono il loro assetto per andare a recuperarne uno nuovo a distanza di spazio e di tempo. È un po’ il concetto che anima il ‘This_Time / Dis_Place’ di Domenico Sciajno… tanto per aggiungere un’altra citazione. Se questi erano gli obiettivi di La Casa, la dilatazione dei materiali e la loro ricomposizione in un nuovo ordine che ne trasfiguri-riplasmi l’essenza, sembrano pienamente centrati. Ma, oltre allo straniamento spazio-temporale, Les Oscillations contiene un elemento spiazzante intrinseco alla stessa composizione. Perché, seppur suddivisa in due parti separate da alcuni secondi di silenzio, Les Oscillations va intesa come un'unica composizione. Il materiale greggio viene ricomposto, nelle due parti, in forma speculare, cosicché Part 1 termina dove inizia Part 2 e viceversa. Ed ecco che dilatazione e ordine assumono un valore nuovo, un valore legato essenzialmente alla nostra predisposizione mentale, alla nostra capacità di leggere una scrittura capovolta. Alla nostra capacità, in ultimo, di ascoltare la musica, perché la musica è di per sé un linguaggio stravolto e, quasi sempre, travisato. Potremmo così addentrarci in un altro concetto, quello di un ulteriore straniamento spazio-temporale, dove lo spazio e il tempo sono quelli che separano l’atto del comporre dall’atto dell’ascoltare. Cosa resta e cosa arriva, alle nostre orecchie e al nostro cervello, dell’atto pratico fatto da La Casa nel montare i materiali? E, soprattutto, le nostre orecchie e i nostri cervelli ricevono gli stessi segnali o, da individuo a individuo, ricevono segnali diversi? Il dischetto compatto, piatto come lo specchio, rimanda un’immagine sonora che ha una sua profondità e una sua spazialità ma che, come l’immagine allo specchio, è virtuale, e può giungere sformata e/o alterata negli elementi che la compongono. Basta spostarsi di qualche passo per cambiare, come avviene per ogni immagine speculare, le prospettive e la disposizione delle parti che danno forma alla composizione. L’impatto dell’insieme, sicuramente importante in Les Oscillations, può essere quindi frantumato e letto in miriadi di piccoli asteroidi per essere, infine, rimontato mentalmente in tutt’altro ordine. Basta avere la mente libera e gli organi dei sensi disposti ad abbandonarsi all’universo dei suoni. sands-zine

The man with the microphone: that might be the apt description of Eric La Casa. You find him near the sea, alongside the river or in the shed behind his house: always listening with a microphone, a pair of headphones and means to record the sounds. Over the years he must have collected a great deal of these recordings, and for 'Les Oscillations part 1 - 2', he uses in both pieces the same sound material. In part 1 this goes from A to Z, and in part 2 from Z to A: the pieces are mirrored to each-other. If one wouldn't know this, it would be hard to notice. In a collage form we come across airplanes, water sounds and rain drops, some of which might be processed on the computer, but some may not be. Perhaps none of the sounds are: you never know with La Casa. This is a soundscape in it's almost purest form, one should just sit back and listen. Nuovo lavoro per il concretista francese Èric La Casa ed è di nuovo profondo stupore ed ammirazione.
Meraviglia bambinesca che ci rapisce, spazi reali ed immaginati che si vengono a sovrapporre in una serie di stratificazioni sonore di bellezza abissale.
Suoni trovati, suoni rubati; respiro dell'universo che diventa materia.
Di dilatazione si parla, dilatazione del paesaggio, dilatazione delle pupille, l'incanto della distanza, del tempo che diviene liquido amniotico in cui perdersi e ritrovarsi; zen vibrante di luce.
L'introduzione poderosa che si stempera in nube gassosa fluttuante è raro esempio di armonia estrema, quasi da lacrime verrebbe da dire.
Quel che si intravede dietro la densa coltre è un mondo scosso da leggeri tremiti, quasi brividi; l'attimo in cui la razionalità si scontra e collassa su di un istante moltiplicato migliaia di anni.
Poetica del non detto, del non visibile; eppure tremendamente tangibile come poche altre cose.
Reale mappatura neurale di universi interiori muti che in un modo o nell'altro appartengono ad ognuno di noi.
La parola in questi casi collassa inadeguata, si rimane soli ed esposti al freddo senza nessun appiglio ulteriore che non siano i nostri sensi, ed allora accade quello che deve accadere, un processo di riconfigurazione del sentire che sposta un pelo più avanti la nostra soglia di comprensione.
La risultante ottenuta ci comunica per l'ennesima volta che questo universo proseguirà la sua corsa anche senza di noi ma nel frattempo ci tollera benevolo, l'aereo che ad un certo punto solca lo spazio sonoro è li per dimostrarcelo; non abusiamo di questa concessione.
Da avere ad ogni costo per riscoprire il proprio battito del cuore.

Wie verschwommen die Grenzen zwischen Improvisation und Sound Art längst geworden sind, zeigt exemplarisch Giuseppe Ielasis Fringes-Katalog, in dem überwiegend diskrete Plinker und Plonker wie Ielasi selbst oder Bosetti, Butcher, Durrant, Krebs, Lehn, Malfatti, Maxwells Dämon, Rainey oder SciajnoSeite an Seite mit Brandon LaBelle und der klassischen Musique concrète von La Casa stehn. Raum und Zeit werden offenbar auf verwandte Weise, eine bruitistische, umkreist, die einen per Körper und Instrument, La Casa mit Fieldrecordings und Elektronik. Seine beiden ‚Oscillations‘ korrespondieren entlang einer 1 1/2-minütigen stillen Symmetrieachse, die allerdings wie ein Zerrspiegel wirkt, so dass kein glatter Vorwärts-Rückwärts-Effekt entstand. La Casas Naturbilder reflektieren in diesem Doppelspiegel ein ‚Draußen‘ mit filmischer Dynamik, Regen peitscht zischend ins Gelände, plätschert als rieselnde und rasselnde Perkussion, in die der Wind faucht für eine uralte Symphonie aus Wasser und Luft. Was man als Kind vergeblich erträumte, Schnee ‚trocknen‘ für den Sommer oder Sonne ‚eintüten‘, das bewerkstelligen Mikrophone. Die eingefangenen Mikrophonien gelangen als schizophone Injektionen in fremde Köpfe, irgendwo und jederzeit. Köpfe, über denen ein Motorflugzeug mit Dopplereffekt hinweg zieht, 500 Privatmaschinen, gespiegelt in 500 CDs, X Hirnen, in denen Grillen zu zirpen beginnen, obwohl draußen nur eine Kreuzung zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit vor sich hin ödet. La Casas Naturfiktion ist, obwohl menschenleer, doch nur eine Lo-Fi-Landschaft. Selbst nach Abklingen des Regengusses durchrauscht von einem irridierenden hellen Gedröhn oder einem undefinierbaren Hintergrundsrauschen wie von wummernden Turbinen oder vorbeifahrenden Zügen. Ein französisches Gegenstück zu Organum oder Monos, aber unruhiger. Eine Eisenstange rollt durch Bild. Diese Dröhnlandschaft ist industrial angefressen, eine Idylle zweiter Ordnung.
