Ov Lustra by Sun Speaker

‘Ov Lustra’, is Sun Speaker's debut album and exposé into Blackened Death Metal. Sun Speaker has created a deep rooted universe around a being called, “The Speaker” who follows a Joseph Campbell style story arc that welcomes the listener to experience every nuance of their prose. Like a greek myth, this album takes the listener through a winding path of discovery and a plethora of experiences.

We as a band, request one thing. Find headphones, find a comfortable chair, or couch, and immerse yourself as deeply as you can. Let the ambiance of the album take you away from the surly bonds of Earth and place you in our world for a half hour. Listen closely, and read the liner notes along with the music for a better experience. The artwork, created by Instagram Artist, Saprophial, is both a nod to the history of our character and a glimpse into the future of the rest of the story which has yet to be told. In the history of ‘The Speaker’ there is a deity, depicted on the front of the record, who stripped the powers from two races, ‘The Speaker’s’ and ‘The See-er’s.’ These two races were forced to work in harmony by being made co-dependent on one another. Speakers are blind but have the gift of oration and the ability to receive clairvoyant visions. The See-ers are mute, but have the ability to transfer their clairvoyant visions to the The Speakers by way of touch. The harmonious relationship between the two races is used to keep the peace within their civilization, creating a “Brave New World” esque dystopian fantasy. If at all possible you should go into this record with as much of an open mind as possible. Expect to be caught off guard by changing time signatures and jarring riffs that are sure to get stuck in your head for days at a time. When asked about our influences, we sum it up to a common denominator of four bands, Fallujah, Behemoth, The Black Dahlia Murder and Kardashev. That being said, however, those are not our only influences, guitarist Tyler Allen pulls influence from a breadth of literature and contemporary composers, while guitarist Ryan Todd pulls influence from bands that he grew up on. While Randy and Gabe pull their influences from a number of sources including classical music, and bands from their respective childhoods. The primary reason that we give those four bands as our common denominator answer is largely in part due to sonic inspiration. Each of the four bands has an element that we thoroughly enjoy but we don’t want to sit on for too long. We don’t want to soak our album in lead laden guitar passages such as Fallujah, and we don’t want to put our flag in the ground of atmosphere so perfectly held by Kardashev, nor do we want to over encumber ourselves with riff after riff as expertly done by The Black Dahlia Murder, and we don’t want to rely too heavily on the brutally crushing sound so expertly executed by Behemoth. Instead, we want to take these elements and use them to spice up our own writing. We set out to hear something that wasn’t being made just as our predecessors did.
