The album begins with one of our dear Nyikina elders, Jeannie Wabi, singing out in language ‘hurry up everyone, come here now, hurry up!’
Mundajarra is a call to people to take their life by the reigns. With a rocky edge of urgency and a playful funky feel its saying, here, here’s how to be happier everyone, I found it! We all have the power.
Mundajarra is first up on the album and set in the Dark Moon phase, the reflective phase, where we start setting intentions for better choices, in the dark struggle moments, it’s what we do from here that counts. ‘It’s not fate, it’s not too late’. Guess what is a part of the Dark Moon phase? New Moon.
Mundajarra is the first song I ever wrote in my mob’s language so it holds a special place in my heart. New Moon. The first 20 times I sang it I just cried and cried. I’m really passionate about voices (our voices), about freeing the voice, using the voice, healing the hurts of the voice from the many times we’ve been silenced and suppressed, especially women and especially minority group women and language of course entwines with that. Language is how we communicate using the voice. To control a people, first step is to take away their voice. Learning/relearning language is such a huge healing process. The necessity goes much deeper than words.
