A tree fell down outside my house this morning
It fell without warning
As it hit the ground
It was old as I am
In the afternoon
And it made me wonder
Will I go soon

Everyone who saw it said "It looked fine"
"It was in its prime"
"Never coming down"
But you and I we both know different
It was something inside
Rotten, alone
Eating time

And as I watched the moment it came down
I was holding the axe
There was no one insight
And in that moment I'm sure I fell too
Do I bury the hatchet
Does it matter at all

Maybe I've snapped like some low hanging branch
Holding onto its last piece of fruit
The neighbours all know
I'm sure they saw
As I killed the last thing
On our block

And then I watched the moment it came down
I was holding the axe
There was no one insight
And in that moment I'm sure I fell too
Do I bury the hatchet
Does it matter at all

So let's burn the whole thing
Let the ashes move on
They'll all forget you
By the time the embers cool off
