1982-280zx by Skyko

1982-280zx is a release I created while giving my new Korg MS-20 a test drive. Obsessed with the aggressive, biting, growling tone of the Korg's low end, I wrote the bass line that's been in my head ever since I went to the Blitz Club in Odense, Denmark back in 1994. The breakdown was first inspired by simply investigating a suspended chord to be used to resolve to the tonic. After experimenting, the end result is more of an uplifting, Vangelis styled vibe because of the switch to a Major key.

It was in the dead of winter 1983 in a small suburban town in Pennsylvania. I found a graveyard of wrecked cars that were waiting for the recycling compactor. There was this beautiful, sleek 1982 280zx there. It was practically brand new - but had been in a bad accident. I tried the door handle and found it was unlocked, so I sat inside to warm up. The interior was still in perfect condition - I imagined owning that car, taking the T-Tops off and driving down the California coastline on a hot summer day - and I returned back to sit in it several times, even up into the spring.

I moved to Cali a couple years later, but never got the pleasure of owning a 280zx. I was able to eventually get an IROC Z-28 in 1990 but immediately sold it when I found that it was possible to purchase a computer & MIDI setup to make music with... I spent all my time driving that - even up until today. 😉
