Soup's On by S. Hollis Mickey and David Vélez

This collaborative work between artists S. Hollis Mickey and David Vélez was created as a kind of recipe exchange. Each artist cooked a dish and recorded sound of that dish in process, then manipulated that recording with additional music and sound. The recipe and base sound layer was sent to the other artist. Just like in cooking when one riffs on another's recipe, the receiving artist tweaked the track and added their own resonances. The result is two extended meditations on aural communion, sharing of cooking, and creating across continents.

This project was created in the midst of significant decline of Hollis' health. Hollis has severe myalgic encephalomyelitis- a chronic, complex, neuroimmune disease with no effective treatments or cure. Due to rapid disease progression shortly after recording these tracks, Hollis has been unable to play or compose music for some time. As well, she is no longer able to listen to certain sounds and music without causing symptom exacerbations, so the music had to be adjusted to take out some of the high-end frequencies. All proceeds of purchases will be donated to Solve M.E., a non-profit organization that serves as a catalyst for critical research into diagnostics, treatments, and cures for myalgic encephalomyelitis, Long Covid and other post-infection diseases.
