“The Unterman” glows as if culled from a missing Plaid extract —crunchy beatwork, skittery melodic tones, rhythmic chimes looped in an electrical soup. Weldroid (aka Tamas Zsiros) isn’t new to these 8-bit mechanical noises—having strewn together a myriad of releases and appearances since 2008, Zsiros has found his sonic signature. Scribbling data bits around staccato patches, “The Reparateur” elicits world sounds drifting through strangely attractive charges. “Backyard Experiments” peels open an emotive Toytronic flurry where elements of classic Gimmik and Abfahrt Hinwil maneuver through discrete harmonic passages. On other avenues, tracks like “Empt” unfold with minimal techno dynamics and low-lit blips and plunks as it slowly dissolves. The rubbery IDM and catchy glitch featured on “Shaneshifter” (by Wolandroid and Weldroid) is a video-game mastery and symphonic whirlwind. And just as time slips away, the downtempo grit and melancholy of “Call Me When It’s Over,” is a relaxed sojourn through IDM’s blissful past. As a whole, EXPTIME revolves around therapeutic electronics to both calm and clutter the senses and it achieves just that. (Pietro da Sacco)
