Cold Reading by Wings of an Angel & Scott Lawlor

Cold reading is a set of techniques used by mentalists, psychics, fortune-tellers, mediums and illusionists to imply that the reader knows much more about the person than one actually does.

This LP, an emotive collaboration between ambient drone magicians Scott Lawlor & Wings of an Angel, implies the paranormal set of mind on every drift of its warm atmospheric sound. This paradoxical contrast between the sonic warmth and the main theme (a paradox in itself) creates a fascinating landscape for para-psychological experimentation with untamed moods, obscure ideas about our intimately personal human lives and the possibility of a transpersonal meta-reality that is beyond our comprehension. But above all, it is a wild emotional roller-coaster that builds upon the premise of ambient music to touch the soul and pierce through our defense mechanisms.

Mysticism and the preoccupation with esoteric occult practices draw our attention outside of ourselves; in such a way that instead of dealing with one's emotions, existential anxieties and cognitive distortions – one's attention is drawn to metaphysics and thus being filtered by proxy. We present this album as an antithesis, speaking of the importance of dealing directly with one's woes and ills, NOT running away from them to a third party or a spiritual doctrine. Let's assume that if God really exists – mustn't it be discovered via the positive energy within us, that we were born with as a default (almost) effortless potential? Aka love, friendliness, warmth, tenderness etc'? Then, what's the logic behind hardcore ascetic practices and violent acts of so-called faith that many charlatans promote as a way of dealing with life's hardships and stepping towards pseudo-divinity?

We call you all to examine your conduct and immunize yourself to techniques that are meant to control you rather than free you. Don't mistake lies for truth. Mentalists, psychics, fortune-tellers, mediums and illusionists HAVE NOTHING to tell you that you didn't know before. It's all a show akin to a human circus; a morbid, dishonorable and shadowy one. A theater of shadows that puts a dark veil on top of you.

If you allow yourself to speak about how you feel and process your feelings alone and with your significant other(s) – you will gain a better understanding of yourself and feel more at ease in the world. Violence – intellectual as well as physical – is born in the no man's land of our inner slaughter fields. You know yourself way better than anyone else does; you yourself know what's really best for you.

I am an ambient artist who composes in many sub-genres such as dark and light ambient, solo piano, cosmic drone, avant-garde and noise music both as a solo artist and as a collaborating partner. My music is created with intentionality, creating a sonic space for the unfolding of personal stories as well as exploration of spiritual and cultural themes which profoundly influence our society.
