When weaving a carpet, the yarn may run out, and so, at times, a slight deviation in colour must be accepted: the Abrash (Arabic for mottled, speckled). Yet, Abrash also refers to a deliberate deviation, a variation – everything is tolerated, except perfection. Abrash is a testament to originality and at the same time offers a welcome interplay of shades.

Played using oud with small objects, tuning forks, feedback vibrations through the soundboard, these six sound textures are spun out from various strands, figures, ornaments and patterns. Abrash emerged where a departure from the familiar, the expected, the perfect—whether deliberate or accidental—begins. Perhaps my task was to unravel the found textures into a new fabric, a fabric that encourages such variations: a deviation that gives space to a process that celebrates the unplanned and the imperfect
