Samandtheplants returns with a new album titled ‘Flaming Liar’. This collection captures Samandtheplants at his most present, his most vulnerable and most profound. Sam has quietly harnessed the power of the here and now, wearing his heart prominently on his sleeve when laying out these homespun folk ballads for all to hear. The swell of the harmonium, the deft craftsmanship in the songwriting and the lofi crackle and hiss of the recording gear, make for a highly meditative listen.
The songs herein were written mostly for voice and harmonium with as few overdubs as possible, if any. Anyone familiar with his earlier work will surely recognise the positively ramshackle charm in the production and the delightfully Lancastrian distinction in his voice but there is another, deeper facet at play here, something that no amount of digital tinkering can achieve, something that is only ever captured in the spontaneity of live performance.
Certainly his least fragmented offering to date, this hour long album runs for the most part, as back to back songs. In many ways this is a statement of realisation, a wholesome gift of some of his most treasured works.
