"Sacrificator / Scarificator" by Sainerine
What happens to a body without autonomy? Does it learn the language of its keepers to negotiate freedom? Or does it commit an extreme act to be thrown from the clutches of good grace? Sainerine is known in Vancouver for live performances involving self-mortification with an industrial staple gun. These wounds of purity and obedience are drained on the debut tape, “Sacrificator / Scarificator”. Raised in institutions of Catholicism and classical music, they perform what they know: blood and opera. Synth arrangements weep over rich vocals and pained harmonies, alongside elements of noise that rip into the belly of this confessional. The artist negotiates a constricted past, struggling to remove a religious birthmark. Sainerine sings, “He’s holding me too close to say goodbye, at night I drift to sleep under watchful eye...”
