Magpie from Witch Fields by The Rowan Amber Mill
This is a companion piece (of sorts) to The Eyes of a Scarecrow. But instead of featuring the venerable crows, we have one of the hated folk devils in the Magpie.
Magpies have been persecuted for centuries. Is it their intelligence or their hideous cackle that inspired the many dark historical folk tales about their cunning / devilment?
I think they need an even break and some better PR.
The magpie in my story is serene and happy to look down on the machinations of the fields below as witch hunters have woven their lies and deceptions for personal gain. The magpie is content, that for once, it is not themself, that is being chased from pillar to post.

The magpie so high in the tree

Floating above the rye.

A prison built of my construct, locked behind theses doors.
I can't seem to find the way to slip out of these claws.
I just know I can't go on if I can't find out where we are.
