Shungite by Richard Turgeon
Shungite is a mysterious, jet-black mineral found only in Russia’s Karelia region—formed two billion years ago and rumored to purify water, block EMFs, and heal what ails you. That mix of ancient depth and protective power sparked the concept for Shungite: six new songs that channel the stone’s dark sheen into punchy guitars, heavier grooves, and lyrics about finding steady ground in chaotic times.
Written, performed, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Bay Area singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Richard Turgeon, the record pushes past the “power-pop” tag toward the raw edge of ’90s indie and alt-rock he grew up on. It’s the most aggressive, cohesive set Rich has crafted in his seven-album run, capped by four bonus cuts available exclusively on the Kool Kat Musik CD edition.
Three DIY videos—“Small Fry,” the title track, and “Signs”—capture the album’s stark aesthetic and were shot on zero budget with friends and family behind the lens. Watch the full playlist here:
