Mistral by Procedural Braindance

Procedural Braindance returns with MISTRAL, a 20+ track sophomore effort that not only reiterates just how robust a generative music system can be, but ventures into colorful new ground with the format. Generally speaking, Mistral focuses a bit more on faster tempos and Tuss/Syro-esque spazzouts, replete with swollen chorus-glossed chords, roundly inflated basslines and many classic drum machine sounds in hyperactive mode. There's a little bit more of a bite to the tracks here than on Pentachroma, bringing to mind some of the cuts from Proc. Braindance's alter-ego, Face Culler. Still, for the sequencing geeks and their ilk, there're more than enough pretty melodies and pad sweeps to keep you stargazing the whole time. An absolute wonderland of synthesis and an even greater accomplishment considering the very real fact that this is 100% generative, music made and played by a program that Procedural Braindance coded and created from the ground up. We here at RP are always stunned enough at the quality on offer from this producer and his system that it becomes criminally easy to get comfortable about it. Don't sleep!

As with Pentachroma, Mistral's limited edition CD-R iteration comes with several bonus tracks exclusive to the format. Also included as digital bonuses are a video illustrating one of the PB software patches in action, and also a text document providing greater detail on the source of this generative system.
