Rose from Never Closer by Raphael Doyle
Love in bedsitland. This is about when you've got nothing and it's not coming together, but someone believes in you. We tried a lot of different approaches to this song and then Gerry said, I can hear this a different way, let's start again. He and I went back into his studio and with just him on piano, we stripped it right back and explored the gut and heart of the song, got a true vocal, then built it back up to something new. Great Gerry Diver work.

First discovered by Alexis Korner, Raphael Doyle formed the acoustic trio Café Society with Hereward Kaye & Tom Robinson in 1973. Ray Davies produced their debut album in 1975.
4 decades on Raphael recorded his definitive solo album Never Closer, helped by son Louis Doyle, producer Gerry Diver and old friend Tom Robinson. It was released on Cooking Vinyl in January 2017.
