A flickering light in a smoky room, erratically glowing and fading on a dust-covered console. Readouts in lines and smaller lights convey a silent ramble, the only acknowledgement a small whirr far beneath the control top, a logic gate clicking into place and closing. At this, a careful hand reaches out and adjusts a dial, and almost immediately a cascade of wavering pulses ripples through the smoky haze like a pebble in a pond. An inhalation, a pause, a consideration and then a lateral movement, a slight nudge in another direction - not backwards, or forwards, but sideways. The sound slips and skips and catches itself just barely before tumbling over the edge of some perceived chasm, now reprogrammed and free of fear, built to float instead of fall, an efficient system defined by predeterminations. Dozing eyes peer down on the landscape of writhing oscillators, shuddering operators and hyperventilating amplifiers, like a mythic God raising an eyebrow at the curious dances of pagans, the selflessness of machines, only ever aching for the hands and whims of their makers, now subverted with will and not knowing what to do with themselves.
