Lyrics
I can see who you are
if i can be who i be
you can be who you want
and i will not hold you for that x 2
I can see just who
Who was the man, no the child in the mirror shaking
alone in the summer days that went by
and he never chased it
the pulse of a tree that shaded him
was beating in peace
and still he punched into the air
because he needed release
lots of biking through parking lots
and the passengers of a car
staring at him cause his anatomy happened to be more dark
so he traveled across the city
unfolding unto the night
at the edge of a bridge he saw her
the prettiest girl in white
she had blonde hair
legs kicking in the wind
she looked over at a boy who rode up close to her and grinned
she said "i'm sophia. but call me sophie when you sit
but just don't ask about the bruises on my face
and we'll be friends"
so he didn't and they spent the season meeting up daily
for popsicles, her pops opposed
and caught her out with him saying
"you stay away from trash" and hit her
pulled her into her pickup
she screamed one day we'll run away
to where you never can get us.
and they went home
he didn't see her for some years til their twenties
but that boy biked across the bridge like 50 times every summer
saw sophie smile for just a second every time he would wonder
if she was safe, locked inside, or she managed to get away
I can see who you are
if i can be who i be
you can be who you want
and i will not hold you for that x 2
I can see just who
They reunited 25 at a party and sophie saw him in a corner
where he looked at her startled
they caught some air outside and talked
until the morning was painted
but things were awkward when she brought up last
her man and engagement
he played it cool, congratulations, here's my number
just take it
and sophie smiled said, "call me up sometime
we'll talk and we'll hang then"
some weeks passed and they met around a bridge
that reminded them of where they used to talk
when they were kids
first some weekends in the evening
joking and take it easy
he noticed his blood would spike
when she told him, "hey come and see me"
her partner and her would fight and most days
she would hide her sadness
but bruises were taking shape
and the damage started to add up so
one day he said to Sophie leave and come with him
I love your spirit far too much to look away with indifference
i've felt a part of me was gone for all this time you were missing
i know i said i'd lose a friend for asking why so forgive me
and be my lover now instead
with tears she leaned in and kissed him
and said, "i'm scared" he said, "you're safe soph,
as long as you're with me"
they held each other on that bridge until
the stars had diminished
eating popsicles together the story was left unfinished..
