Hundred Skeletons by Phantom Party

After staying relatively quiet during 2016, Phantom Party’s first LP, Hundred Skeletons, serves as a spirited introduction to the indie trio for new fans as well as a gentle reminder for current followers. Phantom Party is comprised of vocalist/guitarist Joshua Capati, bassist Matthew Slusser, and drummer Austin Cooper. They formed in March 2015, released their debut EP, Stellar, that May and embarked on tour after playing only three shows in their hometown of Tempe, Arizona. Hundred Skeletons is the band’s first full length album and their first proper release since 2015.

“Essentially, this was going to be my last thing. I was going to release it, do rock and roll, then die,” says vocalist and guitarist Joshua Capati outside of his home where the album was recorded. “I pretty much lost touch of who I was. I wouldn’t talk to my band for months. In a sense, me losing my mind is reflected in the lyrics. It made me ask ‘what would I say if this is the last thing I release?’”

The album was created during the course of two years and a lost sense of self. “I fluctuate like this all the time. Except this time, I hated eating, I smoked a pack a day, and I was ready to go,” Capati continues. These struggles are made clear throughout the lyrical content of the record, from the poppy “Runaway Bride” where Capati states “Everyday is lonely and every night is unproductive” or Capati belting “the American dream is my nightmare” in “Tunnel of Love”, the swooning first single from the album. Staying true to their “do-it-yourself” recording vision, the full length was recorded in the den of Capati’s Tempe house over the span of five days. The band also learned how to properly record themselves instead of relying too much on outside help. The album was mixed and mastered by Joshua Capati and Bryce Copple.
