But the unseen pursuer didn’t come for her. For almost half a mile, they seemed to walk in lockstep, speeding and slowing together, as one. She weaved when she could, risking a glance back only when she was behind trees. The darkness was rising fast, the pale fog settling into dew on the leaf litter, soaking into her jeans. She couldn’t see anything, and the noises were fainter now, perhaps even gone.
