Aswan by The Nile Project

In January 2013, the Nile Project brought together 18 musicians from Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Egypt to experiment with a collaborative creative process that would last 10 days. Each musician brought 2 songs. In the mornings, they taught one another their respective musical languages. in the afternoons, they played musical chairs in duos, trios, and quartets. On the 5th day, they performed for each other. The puzzle was all there. It was time to organize the piece into one seamless tapestry and perform it in Aswan and Cairo 4 days later. This recording from the Nile Project’s first live concert showcases the result of this rich encounter.

One of the tightest cross-cultural collaborations in musical history, the Nile Project brings together artists from the 11 Nile countries, representing over 450 million people, to compose new songs that combine the rich diversity of one of the oldest places on Earth.
