The individual variation which all organisms revealed, the hereditary alterations produced by the breeder’s art, the unreturning fossils in the rocks, were finally combined in the minds of Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace with the world of competitive struggle, with the concepts of adaptation and plenitude which were now seen to eternally jostle the living in and out of existence.
