Machine Mountain by Jerry Gordon

This cluster of pieces started with improvising a few drum layers on my phone and then listening to them, hoping to feel how they hinted at next directions. The next directions seemed vague until I saw the photo by Jono David which he generously allows me to use as the cover image.

Jono has a series of beautiful photographs of Mt. Fuji, taken from various locations around its circumference. The cover image, of the industrial plant juxtaposing the famous mountain, immediately caught me and inspired a direction I could trust and follow for improvising these Machine Mountain pieces.

Something about the contrasts and similarities of the two objects -- the machine and the volcano -- fascinates me. One is so iconic and the other so ruinous. But, both are toxic vents of destruction and creation. Both are a source of making something, perhaps energy or insecticide spray or magma or an island. Both loom and define their landscape. Both take over the vista. Both are worthy of fear and admiration. Both are gods in society. Both are symbols for humanity and the Time we call ours. Both haunt the imagination.

So, I hope you can enjoy and endure some, many, all or even just moments of these improvised eruptions of my various creative venting.

2025 threatens to be a wild one.
