Bushed Stiles by Smythsons

Smythsons is the alias of Satoshi Sugitani, a visual and sound artist from Japan. A DJ, photographer, videographer, and producer in turn, Sugitani’s work primarily explores the nature of art-related technologies not only as a medium to express “traditional” human creativity, but also as tools themselves to confront broader notions of concept and aesthetic.

In Bushed Stiles, Smythsons continues to expand on the “angular, abstract funk” we were first introduced to in 2018 with Mechanical Interventions (Terranean Recordings). Again we are immediately swept up in a dizzying journey through the labyrinthian annals of intelligent dance music, where Sugitani deftly transposes the frantic kinetic energy of drum and bass with the dissociative patterns of glitch and deconstructed club; a one-of-a-kind mix that is at once playful, explorative, challenging, and refreshingly stark.

Between it all, Sugitani weaves hypnotic passages of noise wall, an ambitious juxtaposition which operates as a sort of upside-down zone on this blistering dancefloor - the closest the listener gets to anything resembling a chill-out room. In under 20 minutes, Bushed Stiles synthesizes decades of electronic music tradition, and in the process creates an abstract caricature that modernizes the effect.
