Spicy Sparrow by The Mighty Sparrow

Recorded in 1967, Spicy Sparrow—with its unapologetically salacious cover—presents Sparrow moving beyond the traditional calypso form into contemporary pop, soul, and electric grooves.

His classic "Congo Man" (first recorded in 1965) is given a bouncier arrangement, but the story hasn't changed—it's still about the food chain. Sparrow's vocals are as demonic as on the original.

"Half-Baked Duck," while not specifically about the culinary arts, involves a man served an appetizer and demanding the entree AND dessert.

"Bois Bande" is about a natural remedy for erectile dysfunction, taken in liquid form.

Though recorded and released in the psychedelic Summer of Love, the song "Peace and Love" is anything but a hippie anthem. There's only one thing on Sparrow's mind—and it's not bringing about global unity (though he does seek a harmonic convergence).

Spicy Sparrow is a solid collection of well-produced material, presenting Sparrow typically confident and audacious, with a spirit that never flags.

He's not the Elvis of Calypso. He's not the Sinatra of Calypso. He's not the Beatles, Dylan, James Brown, or Brian Wilson of Calypso. He's the MIGHTY SPARROW.
