Complete Deletion by M-G Dysfunction
Hi. I’m Fred, a music-maker from Leeds. Generally I go by Fred M-G but sometimes I make work under the name of M-G Dysfunction. My new album Complete Deletion is an M-G Dysfunction affair and it’s being released by don't drone alone.
I hate M-G Dysfunction. I hate the sentiments that I express there and I hate the demons that I face when I make this stuff. I hate the project’s whole pseudo-intellectual anti-music schtick. It is dysfunctional music that comes from dysfunctional parts of my personality. I’d much rather I didn’t have to engage with these sides of myself and that I could just get on with living my life in a relatively uncomplicated way.
But they are there, so I have to deal with them. Complete Deletion is what emerged from a couple of years in my mid-20s when I was often at war with myself. I think hyperbolic statements like ‘I was at war with myself’ are stupid but I feel compelled to use one here - another example of M-G Dysfunction making me look like an idiot.
I look back on the period that spawned Complete Deletion as a bit of a lost time, one of enervation and self-sabotage. Those who purchase copies of the cassette will find a poem on the inside of the cover which narrows down how I felt in those moments.
I began making these tracks by turning up the speed on my drum machine until it started to produce drones. I then chopped up those drones and interspersed them with other instrumentation - synths, cello, records played on a broken turntable which I sped up and slowed down by hand, a little guitar, a space echo pedal - which I also edited, re-sampled and ran through various Ableton plug-ins. There are bits of spoken word/poetry on the record too, and also a bit of singing that I recorded when a choir were singing in a park opposite my house one day. I don’t know how I’d go about finding the choir again but if I track them down in future I’ll let you know who it is so they can get their credit.
I think that Complete Deletion sounds like Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement and Radiante Pourpre and, if you squint, Sunn O))). Robin from don't drone alone says that it reminds him of Carl Stone.
