»Coffee Love«, out on 30 April 2020, is the first single from Martha Rose’s forthcoming second album »Undress & Dive After«, to be released on 31 July (download / stream) and 4 September 2020 (vinyl) on Treibender Teppich Records (Stuttgart; vinyl, download/stream for World excl. GSA)) and Martin Hossbach (Berlin; digital, GSA only).
About the song Rose says: »I wrote this for a friend of mine, at a folk festival in England. I was feeling very glum, and I had no money. We were camping and I was really unprepared, but she had a coffee filter cup and made me coffee every morning, which I was clearly disproportionately grateful for in that moment.«
Rose learnt to play the violin as a child, and studied English and German literature. She began writing songs after she was given a guitar wrapped up in newspaper by her first boyfriend. She has since gained a cult following in both the UK and Germany (especially in Berlin). Her debut album, »Spit«, came out in 2016 on Treibender Teppich Records. She has been working extensively with other musicians as a multi-instrumentalist and has supported artists such as Kevin Morby, Ilgen-Nur and Joan as Policewoman. She has performed and recorded with Berlin-favourites such as Fenster, Magic Island, Jaakko Eino Kalevi, John Moods and Stella Sommer.
The accompanying music video was directed by musician and film maker Lisa Klinkhammer. She developed the concept based upon a vision of playful 2000s music video dance moves and dreamy minimalism. The video revolves around the song itself and Martha Rose as a performer, reflecting her playful and tender aesthetics. Together with performer Lizzy Sell and musician Candelaria Saenz Valiente, Martha and Lisa choreographed a dance that the three women deliver with a little wink throughout.
