Gaidarski is a Balkan folk melody played on a length of narrow aluminium tube with a sopranino sax mouthpiece attached. This hybrid instrument also incorporates a “flea hole” which is characteristic to the melody tube (or chanter) in both Macedonian and Bulgarian bagpipes. The flea-hole enables a modal major/minor shift along with some characteristic gracings.
My thanks to friend and mentor, Linsey Pollak whose invention, the gaidanet, was inspiration for this, my own version.
Mark Cain is an Australian woodwind specialist who also plays a variety of ethnic wind instruments and reed instruments of his own invention. Cain performs and records with the group, EASTWINDS (see also on Bandcamp) and founded DARAMAD (also on Bandcamp).
