for months through the canyon
without pasture in sight
I slip my pack down from my back
we'll just camp here tonight

but business without leisure
can wear a mans soul out
& darkness overwhelms me as
the fire's burning down

into nightmares of what you'd say
before you went away
rushed along
on the crest of a wave
so alone
still relatively unknown
but later on

the day starts when the dawn breaks
to restart the routine
takes a breath & holds it down
insides burning green
it's freedom of decision
this gift bestowed on me
I told myself my works worth more than debt & a degree

but pretty soon you'll have to choose
what half of yourself you'll lose
caught every ear
read every face in the room
but later on
once everyone was gone
