LOCOMOTIVATION by Makucevich

Thank you Sven, your perceptions and insights are most appreciated. While an understanding of the methods I use in producing music is not necessary for fully enjoying and getting the most out of it, I realize that it can be interesting to know about “what’s under the hood”.

The underlying organization of LOCOMOTIVATION is completely different from that of CIRCUITRY. While all of CIRCUITRY’s parts are interconnected by tempo and orchestration, LOCOMOTIVATION is more like a suite of stand alone pieces. It also contains what I call “Sound Sculpture” pieces that come from a long standing interest of mine in the Musique Concret or “Tape Music” of the 1950’s and 60’s. TT1 is an example of that. It is made up of sounds mixed together in a manner similar to Abstract Surrealist painting or sculpture.

CAB on the other hand has a more normal instrumentation and a polymetric structure. For example it starts with percussion in 9/8 with measures of 4 plus 5. The Bass and melody instruments enter and play in 3/4 over that and their rhythm becomes the predominate one. But when they stop there is the 9/8 feel again but it has been there all along. A similar thing goes on at the end with the whole tone guitar solo.

RockerBlender uses exotic scales and is what I would call a dramatic piece. The rhythm is pretty straightforward until the final melody comes in. There is a long delay added which throws the melody out of phase with itself and forms a kind of counterpoint. The ending is another type of sound sculpture in the form of a big drone. There is a lot of complexity in a single sustained note.

Although you mention construction subtitles that you can’t discover on listening, that’s okay. They are only there to make the music. You can think of them like the architectural structure of a building or design of an automobile. You don’t need to understand those things to fully appreciate a fine car or take full advantage of a house. However if you are interested in those things they can add to the experience.
