UFO Home by Magda and the Aliens

The 14 song album UFO Home has been recorded over March and April 2020, at home, on our four-track cassette machine. Responding to the current situation, UFO Home reflects the crumbling of many worlds but also the emergence of new visions for communities.

The album's playfully experimental song structure, catchy melodies, and sharp, fresh lyrics deal with the themes of isolation, distraction, utopia, as well as new possibilities of family and home. As a recording, UFO Home emphasizes vibe and immediacy. Its musical inspiration can be traced to Pacific North West diy pop and lofi, 80s and 90s Midwestern funk with its cheesy slap bass and spoken lyrics, and electronic dance music.

The choice of the 4-track cassette format was a choice for simplicity and limitations as well as for a surprisingly rich sound. UFO Home made the decision to embrace the coloration of a low-end home recording setup, embrace the hiss, clicks, pops, chair squeaks, even kitchen sounds and bits of music left over on second-hand cassettes that come with recording in a living space.

The UFO Home album features 14 original songs. They include two guest appearances, one by saxophone player Adrienne Kerr and another by guitarist Kevin Mock. It has been mastered by Tacoma based producer David Hrivnak.
