Tahlila from Inner Spaces by Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch and Amir ElSaffar
Tahlila, which takes its name from the Sufi rituals, is the most intense work on the album, reminiscent of a sufi Begins with ElSaffar’s on flugel horn playing in the extreme low register, reminiscent of the ancient wooden trumpets from Uganda. Extensive layering of the trumpets leads to an Iraqi Maqam, with ElSaffar singing a poem by one of the greatest of Arab poets from Baghdad, Al-Mutanabbi (915-965 AD). Helicopter-like rhythms in the electronics enter, and the trumpet returns in a terrifying and ecstatic climax that concludes the album.
