Got my book back the other night
a little sorry exchange,
illuminated by your cars headlights

I checked the pages when I got inside
hoping you'd underlined a phrase,
maybe somehow you have changed your mind

But those words weren’t yours to keep,
and this prose is empty of me
heaven knows, you have let me go

Thought your bookmark might be a letter,
but when it fell out I could see
it was just an old receipt from December

although it's been months, I’m no better
yes I know your pain has passed
but is it too much to ask for a letter?

Would your words be mine to keep,
or would your prose be wasted on me?
Heaven knows I still hear your
words, when I'm tryna sleep
and it goes around in circles you see
heaven knows, I should let you go, go
I should let you go, go, go

I placed my book back up on the shelf,
and in the margins I wrote
a little note only meant for myself
