When did things stop working and when did things seem to get so hard?
I miss the days we’d stay out drinking and hanging out in the yard

or were we already driving away in our separate cars

Singing “Pancho & Lefty,” we were crying on the interstate,
it wasn’t even noon yet
we were leaving Albany

Our time was fading and the sun would surely set
and by the summer's end I had lost my best friend
well you just couldn’t be there and I guess things weren’t meant to be,
and it all would surely end just like it did that summer's eve

I hear that train whistle blowing as I sing to you tonight,
and do you remember when we said we’d ride those rails together till we died?
