Cultivate Consciousness by Lather Sommer Duo
"Adam Sommer and Ben Myers cook up a dense stew of guttural not-rock, starting with the relatively straight-ahead “Unlearn.” Then “A.S.G.T.O.M.” has the pounding “tribal” drums of early industrial mixed with distorted guitar that sounds like an extended post-punk freak-out, plus angst-ridden vocals from somebody named Drekka (I think I’ve got that straight)--eleven minutes in a pretty intense zone. “All Is Love (a mantra)” flips the vibe upside down for a mellow start that unfolds into a heavy mid-tempo slice of not-metal. The heaviness continues on “Makoto Temple,” a long, distorted, grinding beast of a thing--dig the wah guitar action. This duo is from right here in sweet home Bloomington, but I haven’t seen or met them myself."
