E total – or how to create freedom in a limited context. On this album, the excellent MegaOctet of Andy Emler (whose awards include Victoires du jazz 2008, 2010 and Django d’Or 2006, 2008, 2010, to name but a few) give a perfect demonstration of truly virtuoso music, firstly by its soloists (amongst the best instrumentalists on the European scene) and secondly, by its composition, crafted and erudite yet accessible to every ear.
The composer’s musical influences are rich and varied, mostly coming from all the different genres of 20th century music, and contribute to a very special, surprising and jubi- latory aesthetic that Andy calls, “a living European music from the beginning of the cen- tury...” E total – the starting point for all the pieces has been the note E, and the result is an art of contrasts and musical pleasure without any modulation.

Andy Emler, compositeur, pianiste, catalyseur d'enthousiasmes, initiateur de rencontres, arrangeur, passionné par l'improvisation, est un homme d’inventions. Après les classes d'écritures, harmonie, contrepoint, fugue, il se lance dans de multiples expériences avec des musiciens tels que : Antoine Hervé, Michel Portal, François Jeanneau, Woody Shaw, Trilok Gurtu...
Il crée son laboratoire personnel, le MegaOctet en 1989 avec 8 des "plus flambeurs improvisateurs" de la
génération des années 80 qui obtient le Django d’Or de la meilleure formation de jazz
français 1992. Cette formation marquera fortement le paysage musical des années 90, et continue toujours son incroyable chemin.
“E total” ou comment créer la liberté dans un cadre défini. Sur cet album, l'excellent MegaOctet d'Andy Emler (Victoires du jazz 2008, 2010 et Django d'Or 2006, 2008, 2010 entre autres...) nous fait la démonstration d'une musique virtuose, par ses solistes et par une écriture savante et néanmoins lisible par toutes les oreilles. Les influences musicales du compositeur sont multiples et riches, pour l'essentiel venues de toutes les musiques du 20è siècle, qui offrent une esthétique singulière, surprenante et jubilatoire qu'Andy nomme : “une musique européenne vivante de début de siècle...” E total : toutes les pieces sont écrites à partir de la note Mi ( E en anglais) ou l'art des contrastes et du plaisir musical sans jamais moduler.
