I was only five years old when an ear infection sent my temperature rocketing to 104 degrees. Though I was fully conscious in my grandmother's bedroom, something terrifying happened - I could no longer see my family members who were right there in the room with me. In that feverish state, I had a single, vivid hallucination that has stayed crystal clear in my memory ever since. A cowboy appeared, dressed completely in white, and in that moment I knew exactly what he represented. He was Death himself, coming for me in a form perhaps meant to be less frightening to a small child from this world. I recovered from the fever, but I'll never forget my encounter with that otherworldly visitor who stood ready to guide me to the next life.
