In the new album Это есть то (Thou Art That / [ˈɛ.tə ˈje.stʲ ‘to.] / Eto est’ to), Kshettra moves away from familiar dark sound worlds. Although progressive and post-rock still form a strong foundation in many numbers, the band has taken a clear course towards compositions with warm harmonies, the music has been enriched with bright inclusions of electronics and nu-jazz.

Thou Art That began as a collaboration of founding authors Boris Ghas and Viktor Tikhonov with french horn player Gosha Rodin, and later eight more musicians participated in the creation of the album. These are friends and session musicians from Motherbase community and Orange studio, they helped to realize the ideas emerged after the recording started. Kshettra avoided improvisation in the creative process this time, but music found freedom in the compositional fantasy of the authors and the multi-layered studio work.

"It’s been four years since I reviewed two albums by Russian duo Kshettra consisting of Boris Ghas on bass and Viktor Tikhonov on drums. Back then they already used guest musicians to pump up their sound, but it must be said that they were rather dark back then. The music had a certain drone / sludge quality, played often at a sedate pace, resulting in sometimes really long tracks.

When I was told that their new album sounded very different, I was sceptical at first, because artists of claim that their new material is so much better than anything they did before. In the case of Kshettra, the praise is justified. Not only does the duo play more instruments themselves, and not only have they teamed up with Gosha Rodin on French horn player on all the tracks, but there are also additional musicians so that there is a whole panoply of instruments: bass, drums, guitars, French horn, saxophones, synthesizers, sequencers, violin…

To describe the band’s sound is quite difficult. There are elements of post rock, definitely a progressive rock attitude, with all of the synths and wind instruments also a nu jazz vibe, with all taken together making for a heavy brew that will leave you speechless. The songs are mostly instrumental, with some poetry reading happening here and there, and even though I don’t understand the Russian texts, I still can enjoy the language’s melodic delivery.

The first four songs on Thou Art That are totally spectacular. They run between four and six minutes, and not only show Kshettra from an unexpected accessible side, but also surprise with songwriting that I wouldn’t have hoped for after their gloomier predecessors. The saxophones and French horn are an important part of the sound, while the duo is putting their rhythm section this time in the favour of the song. Also new is the guitar which is played in a jazzy way, and when all is said and done, these tracks sound are perfect as Tortoise on the best days. The second half is a little more experimental, with one short minimalist poetry song wedged between two longer songs, where the first combines post rock with sequencer motifs and the last comes with ethnic moments.

In these times where most bands just walk the safe path, it is so rare to find yourself pleasantly surprised. Kshettra have really surpassed themselves this time. Instead of indulging in drone moods, they have this time thoroughly composed their music. If you fancy jazzy Soft Machine, Henry Cow from the Rock In Opposition movement and early post rock bands, you will be delighted by how effortlessly Kshettra combine these different influences into their very own sound."

"Лучше всего альбом этой московской группы описывает, как ни странно его обложка. Танец с самим собой. Такой как из фильмов Линча. И я имею ввиду не Николас Кейджа из "Диких Сердцем", а скорее человека из другого места, танец между белым и черным вигвамами. Там где нарушен привычный порядок вещей, где музыка звучит иначе, времени нет.

Примечательно что этот порядок нарушает и Мила Киселева, подарив альбому голос, вместо ставшего узнаваемым оформления.

"Релизы БНиЛ Рекордс, он же «Зависимый лейбл Без Названия и Логотипа», всегда отличались креативностью исполнителей и нестандартностью их творческих решений. Не является исключением и альбом группы «Кшеттра» под названием «Это есть то». «Кшеттра» - российский коллектив из Подмосковья, из города с «поэтическим» названием Железнодорожный, и существует она уже довольно давно. Основали «Кшеттра» в 2007 году басист Борис Гась и ударник Виктор Тихонов, они же до сих пор являются ядром группы, которая то расширяет, то ужимает свой состав от альбома к альбому. Всего их в дискографии «Кшеттра», вместе с представляемым нами «Это есть то», уже шесть (включая мини-альбомы), а записан он был в одной из московских студий в 2020-2021 годах.

Для меня этот альбом – первая встреча с «Кшеттра», а потому приходится верить на слово пресс-релизу, утверждающему, что «Это есть то» знаменует решительный поворот от ранее присущей группе мрачной дарк-джазовой и пост-роковой стилистики к чему-то более светлому и жизнеутверждающему. То, что я услышал в «Это есть то», показалось мне еще одним вариантом прог-рока, вариантом не тривиальным и действительно живым и интересным. Звуковую палитру своего электро-акустического альбома Гась и Тихонов, авторы музыки, сделали максимально разнообразной за счет привлечения большого количества гостей. Тут и валторна (Родин), и небольшая духовая саксофонная секция (Розенблат и Новиков), и скрипка (Ольховский), и удваивание ударных (Бобров), и чтение поэтических текстов (Киселева), и, конечно же, синтезаторы (Самарин) и прочие электронные эффекты. В разных треках авторы добавляют разные краски, и нигде это не показалось не уместным, что само по себе свидетельствует о зрелости и хорошем вкусе музыкантов. Гась и Тихонов сами написали liner notes, кратко охарактеризовав истоки того или иного решения для каждого трека. Разумеется, импонирует очень широкий культурный бэкграунд: парни свободно черпают из самых разнообразных источников – от Джалаледдина Руми до Маркеса, опираются (или стремятся опереться) на положения дзен-буддизма и индийских философских учений, да и стихи самого Гася в стартовой «Красной букве» звучат вполне достойно.

Собственно, слабых треков в этой очень тщательно продуманной и отшлифованной в студии работе я не услышал. Понятно, что-то понравилось больше, что-то меньше, но это уже вопрос вкусов конкретного слушателя. Мне особенно «легли на сердце» «Туманама», «Бутостеп» и, прежде всего, мощный финальный трек «Шивохам». Но особого значения этим предпочтениям придавать не стоит, а вот услышать «Это есть то» я рекомендовал бы людям с самыми разными музыкальными интересами – здесь многие смогут найти нечто близкое именно для них."

"Das Ensemble – eigentlich Duo – Кшеттра aus Schelesnodoroschny (Железнодоро́жный) selbst übersetzt den Albumtitel mit „Thou Art That“. Darauf generiert das Projekt die wildestmöglichen Genremischungen. Einmal kombinieren Kshettra Progrock und Free Jazz, wie es sich gehört, das passt beides sehr gut zusammen: verschachtelte Drums, haufenweise Saxophone, im Hintergrund funky Gitarren, Melodien zwischen Harmonie und Disharmonie, da schimmern Morphine durch. Einmal jammen die Musiker um einen chilligen synthetischen Drumbeat herum mit jazzigen Motiven, man wähnt sich nachts in einer noch nicht ganz verlassenen Bar irgendwo in einer Großstadt. Sofern nicht die virtuose Jazzigkeit vieler Blasinstrumente vorherrscht, ist der Sound reduziert, die Tracks sind trotzdem komplex, tragen unendlich viele Elemente in sich, hintergründig, versiert, dunkel.

Dunkelheit liegt hier auch unbesungen in vielen Themen, so verarbeitet Boris „Borya“ Ghas den Tod seines Bruders in einem Track, auch die Pandemie findet Niederschlag in einigen Stücken. Die sind zwar instrumental gehalten, in zwei Fällen indes rezitiert Mila Kiseleva Gedichte von Rumi und Boris Ghas. Mit ihrer kühlen, fast aggressiven Art lässt sie einem das Blut in den Adern gefrieren: Wer so spricht, ist gefährlich. Kommt gut! Und trotz aller Dunkelheit liegt vielen Sequenzen auch ein Hoffnungsschimmer inne, „Это есть то“ ist keine Gruftplatte, dafür ist sie auch in ihrer Reduziertheit viel zu agil und vor allem zu jazzig.

Interessanterweise handelt es sich bei Kshettra nicht um eine Band im herkömmlichen Sinne, sondern vielmehr um ein zum Ensemble aufgepepptes Duo, bei dem ein Dutzend Musiker nach Bedarf einspringen. Daher sind nicht alle an allen Tracks beteiligt, und alle sind folgende: die Bandköpfe Boris Ghas (Bass, halbakustische Gitarre, Saxophon, Samples) und Viktor Tikhonov (akustisches und elektronisches Schlagzeug, Percussion, halbakustische und akustische Gitarren, Synthesizer und Sequencer, Metallophon, Saxophon) sowie Gosha Rodin (French Horn mit Effekten, Delay-Noises, halbakustische Gitarre), Nikolai Samarin (Synthesizer, Bass), Mila Kiseleva (Gedichtrezitation), Nikita Gabdullin (E-Gitarre), Ilya Rosenblat (Tenorsaxophon), Alexander Novikov (Baritonsaxophon), Kirill Olkhovsky (Violine), Nikita Bobrov (zweites Schlagzeug), Olga Larionova (Operngesang). Nach „<i>“ und „Five Mothers“ ist dies das dritte Album von Kshettra, dazu gibt es drei EPs und ein Live-Album."

"Kshettra have presented us with a new album which moves away from the familiar sounds of their last album, 2017’s Five Mothers, which I reviewed for TPA. The founder members of Boris Gas and Viktor Tikhonov began a collaboration with French horn player Gosha Rodin to create this album, joined by a further eight musicians during the process. Recording was at Orange Studio in Moscow during August 2021, with mixing and mastering by Nikolai Samarin. The music was composed separately with four tracks from Boris, two from Viktor and one from Gosha.

The band’s music has always had a progressive, post-rock, jazz feel, with some of the songs having a darker edge. Here they have decided to include new ideas which have helped to progress and advance their sound. The addition of electronics and acoustic instruments has created warmer harmonies and direction while still remaining linked to their musical ideals.

The album’s seven tracks vary in length from three-and-a-half minutes to just over nine, totalling a very vinyl friendly forty-minutes, a satisfying listening time, the album being of such quality that it cries out to be replayed as soon as it finishes.

Things kick off with Red Letter, a gentle acoustic guitar start followed by a sparse drum pattern, the pace picking up at around a minute- and-a-half. The bass and keyboards start to drive the song forward before what sounds like a sequencer takes over, Mila Kisheleva reciting some of Boris’ poetry over the top. Although the poetry is delivered in their native Russian, it does work well; a very different start but so interesting to be sure.

We then fall into familiar Kshettra territory with the next track. It’s Not All, That Behind The Darkness of Things. We get some lovely jazz work, which changes focus half-way through when it becomes more stilted, before some rampant saxophone takes us to the end. Off to a good start, now we change pace again on Tumanama, with a cool and lightweight piece which drifts along with lots of added textures, including some great guitar work.


Butohstep gives us an interesting mix of instruments, carefully selected, the use of electronics giving rise to a pulsating song. Colo-colo follows, and this is a good example of their expanding horizons, double drum kits filling out the sound, accompanied by electronics with a French horn with added effects in the mix. This is the longest track and it is a journey packed with ideas.

After the successful use of poetry in the opening track, here on the album’s shortest track, I Am You, it returns. Again written by Ghas and delivered by Mila over a repeating theme which comes to a noisy climatic conclusion. The closing track, Shivoham is a darker composition than most of what has come before, Boris stating that this composition is “as solemn as a stormy sky”, Viktor saying that it “still invokes many feelings in me, from excitement to fearlessness”. I include these two quotes as they sum up so well what this track is about. It has a great jazz/rock feel, the excellent rhythm section supporting the saxophone here, which moves around to create texture. Towards the end, Olga Larionova’s vocals enter to lift the song again to another level in a perfectly paced song.

This is an album that demonstrates the band’s willingness to develop new ideas and experiment with sounds, but all the while tied into their love of jazz fusion, prog and post-rock ideals. They have created music with an excellent variety of ideas, a clear progression embracing new directions which now add electronic and “nu-jazz” to their repertoire. A worthy listen which deserves to heard by a wider audience."

De band werd in 2007 oorspronkelijk door het duo Boris Ghas (basgitaar) en Victor Tikhonov (drums) opgericht en in 2009 kwam Boris Pepelin (saxofoon) het duo versterken, waarna dit trio in dat jaar hun eerste demo maakte, om vervolgens uit elkaar te gaan.

Het album begint met "Red Letter", waarin Kshettra een prachtig rustig avant garde nummer, dat na iets meer dan een minuut versneld wordt en klassieke elementen en een geproken tekst krijgt toegevoegd en gaat swingen, waarna "It's Not All, That Behind the Darkness Of Things" volgt en de band een geweldig stuk rock in opposition met een gemiddeld tempo, een terugkerend ritme en jazz invloeden.
Daarna volgen "Tumanama", een prima smooth jazz nummer met een niet al te hoog tempo en "Butohstep", een uitstekend nummer met subtiele tempowisselingen en een terugkerend ritme. 
In "Colo-Colo speelt Kshettra een schitterend avant garde nummer met een niet al te hoog tempo, dat na een minuut meer snelheid krijgt, waarbij de muziek verandert en een aanstekelijk dansbaar ritme bevat en in "I Am You" begint de muziek met een gesproken tekst, die door de gitaar begeleid wordt, dat na enkele minuten over gaat in een licht hypnotiserend stuk gitaarspel met een terugkerend eentonig ritme, dat tegen het einde experimentele elementen bijgevoegd krijgt.
Verder volgt "Shivoham", een fantastisch langzaam nummer met zware midden Oosterse klanken, een terugkerend ritme en een enigszins trieste ondertoon.

"Thou Art That" van Kshettra is een verrukkelijk digitaal album, waarin de band jazz, rock in opposition en experimentele klanken vakkundig aaneen smeedt en ik heb hier dan ook zeer van genoten, waardoor ik deze digitale schijf dan ook sterk kan aanbevelen aan liefhebbers van deze genres."
