A REINTERPRETED SOUNDTRACK
モノクロの黙示録。
The soundtrack for Alexander Sokurov’s short film “Sonata for Hitler”
remastered and reinterpreted by Kid Mania
Alexander Sokurov’s “Sonata for Hitler” was created in 1979, but did not see a public screening until 1989. Banned for a decade by the Soviet Union, the film consists of dusky, ominous moments edited from German and Soviet archive footage at the end of World War II. Composed as a surreal montage ostensibly depicting the parallel dictatorships of Hitler and Stalin, Sokurov creates an abstract and fragmented, but ultimately provocative and internally cohesive statement on isolationism, militarism, fanaticism and tyranny.
Inspired by Sokurov’s short collection of grotesque, peculiar and horrifying images, I felt compelled to remaster and reinterpret the auditory element. The original soundtrack is as fascinating and disturbing as the footage, weaving light woodwind with quiet discordant drones and white noise. I’ve remastered it, improving the sound quality. And while attempting to maintain the integrity of the original piece, I’ve reworked it, adding samples from the period, bits of random sound and introducing a vaguely industrial and sometimes melancholy timbre.
