Vocabulary Dragon by Kevin Kross

This album is a collection of my writings over a multi year span. I've always had a love of hip/hop music, and have written poetry and spoken word for many years of my life. I started going to a local underground open mic in Lexington called The Foundation hosted by artists JustMe and Sheisty Khrist in 2014 and through this amazing event I was able to pick up a mic to feel the culture, work on my craft, and network with an incredibly bright and diverse city of artists. At the same time, I began attending an open mic poetry night in Lexington called Poetry in Motion hosted by artist Devine Carama. My eyes were opened to the true hip/hop culture in Lexington, KY. So many brilliant writers, performers, and all around artists that navigated the local underground scene. I met a true Lexington legend around this same time by the name of JK-47 whose instrumentals, programming, and DJ skills I had been familiar with since I was handed a burned CD in middle school. I expressed how much I enjoyed the music that J.K. put out and he started sending me instrumentals that were incredibly inspiring. Feeling the embrace of the local artists around the city, I began collecting beats and focusing on a project of my own to represent a new voice in the scene. To be accepted in the culture and give my peers an album they could turn up and ride around the city with was a dream I was now chasing with all I had.
However, life throws you opportunities and curve balls when you least expect it. I moved to Nashville, TN during the writing process of Vocabulary Dragon and joined a metal/rap band by the name of Static Headz. Heavy rock music and singing had also been a true passion of mine, and this was the perfect scenario for me to ride that musical wave. Working on multiple projects and working a full time job took over, and the writing of this album slowed a bit. When I moved back to Lexington in 2017 I was determined to chisel out that piece of the local hip/hop scene like I had always wanted to from the start. After many amazing recording sessions at The Dojo Recording Studio with Phil "502" Williams that paralleled with the recording of a brand new Static Headz album recorded with Colt Capperrune at Dark River Studios in TN, my debut hip/hop album was created. There are so many people to thank, so I will just do it like this... Thank you, Lexington, KY. Every person I have met through this journey, every person who has followed my state to state musical endeavors, every person who has ever believed in me and supported me as a writer and artist, every person who has been anticipating this album, and even those who didn't hold the door open for me when they saw me running towards the vast space that is Lexington hip/hop, this one is for you. Crank up the volume, listen, read the lyrics while you listen, share it, and do it all over again while we dig through the muck and murky waters of Covid 2020. Peace be with you all! Much love!
