two very similar pieces - #1 has more of a direction, but I think I prefer #2
(LATER: I've noticed that this is music that is best played very quietly, and also sounds better on very poor speakers - it sounds best of all on my rubbish built-in laptop speakers - where so much is left to the imagination)

It's probably not too noticeable but there're lots of extraneous noises on this one - it was recorded while the neighbours were all doing things - barbecue-party on one side of me, young children playing on the other side, students playing ping-pong directly behind, builders hammering nails into roof joists next to them, lawns being cut all over this hot day.
Because I quite like my neighbours I find it easy to also not mind their noise - and obviously I didn't move from the countryside to the middle of a city in order to get some peace and quiet. Though weirdly and honestly and surprisingly (to me) it's quieter here than it was in the country.
My previous neighbours on one side were a couple of well-to-do students and they were nice enough but we never warmed to one another and because of that I'd be super-over-sensitive to any noise they made - one gentle cough out in their garden would get my back up - whereas a thousand-decibel 3am party from other neighbours who I like wouldn't bother me at all.
And this is possibly one of the many reasons I have always been so unsuccessful in the music world - back when I used to write about music and moved lots in that world I discovered that I didn't like musicians much - they're an odd lot - and yes I'm probably even odder - but whatever the truth, it's part of the reason I've never felt like one of the team, and never been picked for the team anyway.
Consequently they hear even the tiniest noise from me, and it annoys them. If I could make myself more likeable ..... oh bugger it, too late for that.
