A note from a 35 year old John Gold:

Hi there everybody! This is the fruit of me daring to dream I could.

I was seventeen and on a five mile run when I started to get a vision. I heard one of my songs with pianos and drums and a bass guitar and backup vocals. I became certain in my heart at that very moment that I was going to record an album. I had only two other prior recording experiences, one in a studio a neighbor of mine had in his living room, and the other with a program I had dowloaded off of Limewire called “Sony Acid Pro.” Thank you to David Karp who told me how to pirate that program, and generally, with the hand of God, gave me the gentle push I needed to become a lifetime artist. You were the first, man.

When I got home from that run I talked to my dad and asked him if he would help me record and put out a record. He was such a huge blessing in my life. He had faith in me. I asked him for help with one record, but he ended up helping me put out FIVE records. He bought me some basic recording gear, helped me register the songs with the library of congress, paid for the production of the cd’s etc. My dad acted as my first record label, and to be transparent, he was my best one.

In moments where I have been very sad I have talked to my dad about my wasted potential, about all the things I could have done with my life if I hadn’t messed up so much. He always keeps telling me:

“Son I had people come up to me and tell me that your music had really helped them.”

I’m so glad that’s the case. I am older, I don’t have money or power or any higher education than an associates degree. But if this album or any of my music has done something positive for you, I will consider that the treasure of my life.

I want to dedicate this re-release to my father.

One more thing. When I wrote and recorded this and played these songs live I was also hurt and hurting. I ended up hurting some people in the process. I’m thinking of my friend Amy as I write this. She was a good one, she ended up calling me on my bull**** and reconciling with me later and generally helping me move past the pit I threw myself in. I needed her sharpness and accountability to take responsibility. It goes like this, though: people hurt you then you hurt people the way you were hurt. It got way worse, sometimes it’s still getting worse.

If I have ever done anything to hurt you I’m sorry. I think one of the reasons why I gravitate towards Christianity is that Jesus’ blood cleanses us from all sin. I was a horrible person, and I was made that way by people who were made that way by people who were made that way. How can any of us ever break the cycle? I trust in Jesus for that.

I can’t make up for the things I’ve done but I can do the right thing today and take responsibility for yesterday. If I hurt you in any way, I am so deeply sorry.

You Are Beautiful

These songs were about: nm, in, av, abcR&B, j&m, lp, kb, and various actions and reactions of both my peers and myself. Thank you to all my friends A-Z that have helped me stay alive, especially: Linz Martin, Chelsea Haitz, Evan Johnson, and Rebecca Liss. My penpal Carly in Seattle. Sylvia Lizette who inspired me with poetry. Also Flora who lives in Hungary. One time a girl named Ashley told me that in the end only kindness matters, this is the truth, and I find it more true with the passing of time. The road leads where it's led and it's led me to here.
